Mindfulness 101: A Beginner's Guide
This is a place where we are sharing real-life experiences from Mindfulness.com community members — both as a way to help you feel connected to people all around the world who are on the mindfulness journey with you, and also so you can see how regular, simple mindfulness practices are helping people deal with challenges, increase happiness, and improve their everyday wellbeing.
We’d love to introduce you to Alex, who wrote to us from the UK. Keep reading to get his full story.
I was having recurring pain and had a whole heap of debris rushing round my head. My doctor mentioned it to me in early 2020 that meditation might help, so I gave it a go. I promised myself to stick at it and not miss a day.
I was a very angry person, intolerant of everything. I struggled with my emotional regulation and flew into rages, often marginalizing others. Staying perfectly still and quiet for half an hour gave me time to think and remember and analyze. The teachers' videos were relevant to my situation at the time, and I soon couldn't wait for my morning and night meditation.
Mindfulness has helped me through physical, mental, and emotional issues and has shown me I don't have to suffer any further by using resistance and instead choose acceptance. I've learned that I can get angry, but the issue still remains. So I choose to be calm rather than irate.
I would like to learn more and put into practice what I have learned (which is more than I think). I may not be a Zen master, but I feel I have made good use of my daily meditation.
Give it time to understand. Spend time trying to figure it out and enjoy the fact that there is no right or wrong way.
