Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session. We're going to talk about why 98% is hard, but 100% is easy. So there's a freedom and flow that comes when we're 100% committed to something without doubt or hindrance. All of our energy can be directed full, fully, without question.
The mind states of doubt and hesitation are, on the other hand, often exhausting and draining. And so I remember the first two months of this extended retreat I did when I was in Burma, I was only 98% committed. Committed enough to get to the monastery, to commit to an extended silent retreat. I knew I wanted to be there, but I still had some doubt about the teachings and my teacher and whether or not this was the right place for me, or I could do it for six months. Then after a certain point, I just surrendered and decided I'm just going to trust the process and went 100% in.
And immediately after making that mindset shift of going from 98% to a hundred percent, there was more energy in my day, I was more excited about the meditation, my concentration and awareness deepened substantially. I felt more free. I was at ease and. I just, I felt like a superhuman. And this idea comes from one of my mentors, Peter Cook, who says, 98% is hard.
100% is easy. And I'm curious maybe where you've experienced this in your own life? I think a relationship can be one of those. When we're like kind of in and out of a relationship, 98% in, 97% in. We're almost fully there, but not quite there. That extra percentage point or two makes the full difference.
Once we commit full on energy flows easily. We don't question ourselves. We're not caught up in states of doubt, uncertainty. Those mind states, that wavering can be exhausting. And I know I'm certainly someone that's had a lot of familiarity with that at certain points in my life.
And I have a lot of respect for those states. It's, I'm not saying that we need to jump 100% in to every decision just for the sake of commitment. I do think it's important to, to question, to think about and to tread lightly at times. But if you've been in that space for a while, it might be worth considering that it's that extra two percentage points that really makes the difference, that really allows the energy of your life to flow. And what would it be like to surrender to that, to say I'm 100% in.
In my experience, so much of the goodness that we're looking for follows from that commitment. So take from this, what you will. Notice in your life where maybe you have a hundred percent commitment to something, where you have 98% commitment to something. And how does it feel to be a hundred percent in? How does it feel to be 98% in? And what would, what would be required to go from 98 to 100%? I'll talk to you more in the meditation. Thanks for your practice and take care.
