A Bigger Perspective on Meditation

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session we're going to talk about cultivating a bigger perspective on meditation. You know, a big part of what we associate with meditation is focus, directing our attention to a particular object of awareness, such as the breath and area of the body, sound or even a phrase. And so it can follow that we might perceive meditation to be about the thing we're focusing on. And while it's true that a component of meditation is about better understanding the nature of what we're observing, such as that all experience is impermanent, coming and going.

Meditation isn't simply about just being with something like the breath or whatever it is we're focusing on. It's also about, and perhaps even in a bigger way, learning to work with all of the ways your mind turns, just being with your breath into one of the hardest things you'll ever try to do. And have you noticed this? I I'm sure you have, if you've been practicing. We take this very simple practice of just focusing on one thing, perhaps the breath for a few minutes, but it's really hard. Well, what we get to work with then are all the patterns of conditioning that pull us away from this seemingly simple task.

We get to work with the mind that's addicted to drama and excitement, and feels bored with the simplicity of one thing. We get to work with the scattered attention that is used to jumping around from one shiny thing to another. We get to work with self-doubt when it tells us, why bother. Uh, I'm no good at this. I can't meditate.

Everyone else is good at it, but I've been doing this for a month and my mind is still all over the place. We get to notice all of these things that try to tell us to give up or do something else and, and to pause and see we have a choice in how we respond. We can let it go and just come back to this moment of awareness. So in today's meditation, notice all of the ways your mind convinces you to do something else or tries to complicate the simple task of being with one thing, feel the momentum of it, let it move through you, and with a calm resolve, just come back to this moment. The more you do this, the more you'll be able to direct your life rather than simply letting it direct to you.

Thank you for your practice. Now let's settle in for today's meditation.
