A Change of Scene

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today, we're going to talk about times when inner practices might not be the most effective thing and when you might be better off focusing on external action. So sometimes our tools for inner work just aren't enough on their own, or they aren't quite matched to the particular challenge you're finding yourself in. Maybe you tried mindfully accepting a situation or sat to meditate with difficult feelings, tried to find the learning in the middle of it all and yet you're still feeling anxious, furious, unworthy, or overwhelmed. So what can you do in these situations? Now sometimes it really helps just to have a change of scene.

You know, to take some kind of action to shift your focus. Instead of just sitting there and stewing in your own feelings, maybe you could, for instance, get out of the house, call a friend, do something to blow off some steam that's healthy, like punching a punching bag, doing weights or jogging. You could do some cooking or a hobby, or even just watch TV for a while. If you go somewhere, try to go to a place that really feeds your soul, like a park or the ocean, riverside or a garden. And if you're facing really difficult feelings, you know, at some point you will probably still have to come back and engage with your inner world if there's something that needs resolving.

But there is also a place for just changing things on the external level for a while, so that you can kind of change your state and get a little bit of a reset. It can really help us to get unstuck from our inner loop sometimes and make us feel more empowered and settled again. Now, of course, if we tip too far into changing external things instead of facing difficult feelings, we can start suppressing them or avoiding them ongoing. So we don't want to do that because avoiding feelings in the long run only amplifies them, makes them stay around longer. But, sometimes what we really need in order just to shift our state and feel more empowered is just a simple change of scene.

Life gets hard sometimes. And we all struggle sometimes. So just encouraging you to do whatever you need to do in those times to support yourself, be kind to yourself, bring back some balance, presence and grounding again. As always thank you for your practice and your presence here. And let's settle in for meditation now.
