Hi, and welcome to you Daily Mindfulness. So question. When was the last time you and your friends spent time together without someone checking their phone during a lull in the conversation? And have you noticed how, like when one person picks up their phone, someone else always follows suit until eventually everybody's looking at their screens instead of looking at each other? So if one of us picks up our phone in the middle of a discussion, the messagem while perhaps unintentional, is still hurtful. You know, my Twitter feed is more important than being here with you. So today, and for the week going on, I invite you to try a really simple and practical mindfulness practice.
See if you can resist the urge to pick up your phone with, when you're with another person. Even if they do it first. Even if it feels awkward or uncomfortable. So instead of picking up our phones, let's see if we can send a different message to the ones we're face-to-face with, instead, that they matter, that we care, that we're here. You know, the philosopher Simone Weil said, "Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." So let's reclaim some of our attention from being glued to our devices and give it back to ourselves, our present moments and the people we love.
By giving the gift of our attention, we can create true connection in an increasingly distracting and disconnected world.
