An Invitation to Go Easy

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. Today will be an invitation to go easy, which I'd like to start with a poem by Mary Oliver called when I Am Among the Trees. When I am among the trees, especially the willows and honey locust, equally the beech, the oaks and the pines, they give off such hints of gladness, I would almost say they save me, and daily. I am so distant from the hope of myself, in which I have goodness, and discernment, and never hurry through the world but walk slowly, and bow often. Around me the trees stir in their leaves and call out, "Stay awhile." The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, "It's simple," they say, and you too have come into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine. We all might have different ideas of what it means to go through the world with a greater sense of ease filled with light and shining. But I think in general, when we hear this poem, we can sense what the invitation is pointing to, a reconnection to a certain way of being that we know on some level, even if we're disconnected from it, most of the time. Nature is a great way to reconnect with this quality of going easy. Whether it's tuning into the wind blowing through the leaves, a beetle climbing a tree or a sprouting flower.

There's a sense of everything simply unfolding, doing its part in this larger web of life. So I invite you to spend some time in nature today, even if it's just looking at a plant in your home. Be still. Feel your own presence, with everything going on around you and everything within you, and ask yourself what would need to change for me to go more easy. It's a question that will garner different answers for different people and at different points in life.

So see what shows up for you. Thank you for your practice and I'll talk to you soon in the meditation. Take care.
