Awareness Is Meditating

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about how to meditate better. Hmm. It's a little controversial because a lot of what we talk about here is that there are a lot of ways to practice. And there's really no wrong or right way to do it as long as we're keeping a quality of presence and awareness in relationship to our experience.

But there is a reframing that I've found recently that for me, has been very helpful for me to drop into that space of presence that we're cultivating. One of the things that I find can get in the way of my meditation practice or make it more difficult or tense is when I get caught up in the idea that I am meditating. I'm the one focusing on the breath. I'm the one watching the thoughts and bringing it back to the breath. I'm the one trying to be present.

Can you feel some of the ego identification in there and also the sense of having to do something, a striving to get it right? The reframing that I've been working with lately is instead of I'm meditating, just saying awareness is meditating. Awareness is meditating. I noticed what it might be like to even inhabit that right now, even though we're not in the meditation yet. As you listen and as you watch, instead of the sense that I'm the one watching or I'm listening, what would it be like to say, awareness is watching, awareness is listening? We have this other capacity within ourselves that's not thinking, it's not emotion, it's not sensation, it's not even the small sense of I or me. It sort of just watches what is happening in the background.

We call it awareness. Some people might call it higher self, spirit, the soul. For the sake of simplicity, I think awareness captures it because it sort of just knows what is happening without having judgments about it, without trying to change it or fix it. And when it comes to our meditation practice and really mindfulness in general, that's the quality of awareness that we're looking to cultivate that capacity to just see what is here without pushing, without pulling, but just to simply know. So in today's meditation, we'll explore what it's like to inhabit that quality of mind, where instead of I'm the one meditating, awareness is meditating.

And you can also take this into your day to day as an exploration. Anytime you notice yourself getting tense around the practice of being mindful. As always thank you for your practice. I'll talk to you shortly and take care.
