Become a Better Listener

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, I'm going to share a simple tip you can use to become a better listener. As you can imagine being a good listener is a big topic and would probably require a full year of Daily Mindfulness sessions to really do it justice. But there is one tip I've been using in my own life for many years and have been teaching to my students that really seems to get at the heart of effective listening and this is to listen to understand, rather than listen to respond. Listen to understand versus listen to respond.

So think about it. Have you ever found yourself in a conversation with someone and as the person is speaking to you, you're already thinking about what you're going to say next? Maybe just once? If you have, you're not alone. We've all done this. We want to keep the flow of the conversation going. We don't want there to be an awkward silence or the person says something that makes us think of a story that we really want to share and we quickly start thinking about that.

But have you also noticed that sometimes thinking about what you're going to say next can actually get in the way of connecting to the other person and fully hearing and understanding the very thing that you're trying to respond to? I think it's a huge gift to be able to give someone your full presence and attention. And what I love about this tip of listen to understand, not respond is that it's so easy to implement. It doesn't require an extensive meditation practice and it doesn't require an in-depth communication training. You can quickly implement this into your next conversation. Whoever you're talking to - family member, friend, client, child, stranger at the coffee shop.

What would it be like to gift that person, your full presence and make your only intention to listen to understand rather than listen to respond? I think you'll notice that the other person can feel the benefits and you can feel the benefits as well. It immediately develops a greater presence, mindfulness and curiosity. So try this out today and see how it goes. I think you'll be pleased with the results. As always thank you for your practice and I'll talk to you soon.

Take care.
