Change Your Patterns

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to explore changing our patterns. So we all have patterns of conditioning, various scripts that direct our lives. If X happens, then do Y. A lot of these are subconscious and they're almost like psycho-emotional algorithms that tell us how to behave, how to think, how to emote.

But many of these scripts were put in place for good reason when we were young. So imagine a child, he hears his father come home after drinking and out of fear he hides in his room to protect himself. But if in an adult, he hides every time he feels fear, he can't grow in the same way he needs to. This is an example of a script that once served us, but is no longer serving its purpose. Sometimes we need to let go of these patterns, but it's important that we have an honest conversation with ourselves and first ask permission from the part of ourself that wrote the script.

So you might say, I see you. Thank you for trying to help me in this moment. Thank you for telling me what I need to do. I know you're still trying to help me, but I don't think this is the right response right now. I appreciate you being there when I needed you at a certain point in my life, but I'm not that person anymore.

I'm ready to become someone new. I'm wondering if you can help me do this. So in this way, we're having a conversation with the subconscious part of us that still has a positive intention, that's trying to help us, that's trying to serve us in some way. It's not trying to make your life miserable, even if you feel like the pattern or conditioning is frustrating. It's just running an old script.

And before it will let go of that, it needs to know that you see it, that you value it. It wants to be your ally. And so when you treat it in that way, when you let it know what you need, it's much more likely to get on your team and help you move in the new direction that you want to go. Be gentle with this part of you. It is trying to serve you.

The more we fight it, the more we resist it, the more it's going to come up and say, no, no, no, you need me. So letting it know that you see it, that you value it, you appreciate it, but want to use it in a new way is the way that we can actually start to rewrite these scripts, serving the person that we're trying to become, not the person we once were. We'll talk more about this in the meditation. As always, thank you for your practice. I'll talk to you soon and take care.
