Changing the Unchangeable

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about getting through experiences when you feel stuck. Viktor Frankl famously said, choice is the last of the human freedoms. Even when everything has been taken from you, you can still choose your attitude. And this was a man who lost everything and everyone in the Holocaust.

Being human means that we'll have a lot of choices. And sometimes when we think we're stuck, we're really not. We just need to move out of our comfort zone and do something difficult. But other times, we really don't have that opportunity or it's much more complicated. Like we're in a job where we need money or in a community or a culture where we're oppressed for who we are and there's no escaping it as long as we're going to be there.

And so in these things, , if we can't change the circumstance, we can change how we relate to it. This is the attitude that Viktor Frankl was talking about. And the question I like to ask is what greater meaning might this be serving me? Perhaps it's a learning to set a boundary. Perhaps it's an opportunity to expand compassion. Perhaps it might be giving you insight into human nature and understanding the complexity of being human.

This doesn't mean that we shouldn't change situations if we can, but if you do feel stuck, one way to give meaning to the experience is to ask the question, how might this be serving me? What greater meaning might this be showing me? Thank you for your practice. I'll talk to you in the meditation and until then take care.
