Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about how mindfulness helps us feel good. Now the first thing to acknowledge is that mindfulness is not about feeling good. It's about feeling what you're feeling with good awareness. The plot twist on that is that this ends up making you feel good.
But the intention of the practice is not about creating uninterrupted moments of bliss and pleasure. And we often get in the way of the practice when we start chasing these special states - a peaceful state, a transcendent, state, an experience of oneness, or even just simply joy. When these experiences become the goal, we end up neglecting the experience that's in front of us in order to get somewhere else. And the thing about this practice is that the experience we're looking for, doesn't come out of bypassing what's in front of us. It comes out of meeting and befriending what is here.
So much of the tension that we create comes from creating an oppositional relationship to our inner experience. Whether it's fear, anxiety, worry, guilt, shame. All of these things are part of the human experience. But if we start thinking, Ugh I'm doing something wrong because I'm having this experience now, we're just adding another layer of suffering to the experience. So my encouragement to you today is to feel what you're feeling with good awareness, whatever it may be.
And see if you can just be with that, make that the focus of your practice. Remember, meditation is not about feeling good. It's about feeling what you're feeling with good awareness, the plot twist that ends up making you feel good. Thank you for your practice. And I'll talk to you soon in the meditation.
