Free Yourself From Thoughts

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to

your Daily Mindfulness.

In today's session, I want to talk

about freeing yourself from thoughts.

So this will be a simple strategy that

you can use when you find yourself

overly identified with negative thoughts.

You know, part of mindfulness practice

is about learning to hold thoughts in

awareness with less identification so that

you can relate to them more objectively.

And we can also learn to reframe

thoughts or shift thoughts in the mind

so that their impact on us is different.

So let's just take a scenario that

could trigger a certain thought.

Let's say you're a very Type

A personality, used to working

very hard, but you take a break.

And while you're taking that break,

taking time off not doing anything, the

thought arises in your mind, this is weak.

This is weak.

So what I would play around with here

is do a switch from this is weak to

I have a story that this is weak.

This is wak to I have a

story that this is weak.

Saying you have a story in

your mind that this is that.

By simply saying, I have a story about

this, you're creating space around

the thought and identifying more with

the awareness of the thought, rather

than the content of the thought.

Another example, you have a relationship

breakup and the thought comes up that

says, I'm not going to find love again.

You switch that to, I have a story

that I'm not going to find love again.

There's nothing that radical about

this, but it's simple strategies

like this implemented into our day

that can actually be quite freeing.

And they can prevent these single

thought moments from cascading into a

whole host of other negative thoughts.

So today notice when some of these

difficult thoughts come into your mind.

And practice adding.

I have a story about,

whatever the thought is.

And then see how it impacts your

mindfulness journey and your overall

journey of freeing yourself from the often

negative thoughts that permeate our minds.

Thank you for your practice.

Let's settle in for today's meditation.
