How Transformation Happens

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts.

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about the transformative power of negative experiences. So when I reflect on it nearly all of the most transformative moments of my life were preceded by great pain, fear and confusion. And I imagine that's true or at least somewhat true for you too. But we often forget this truth in the moment of present difficult experiences.

So I'd like to walk you through a short reflection and this you could do with your eyes close if you'd like, if you feel comfortable. So just start by thinking back to a transformative life experience you had that was preceded by some discomfort. Once you have that in your mind, reflect on how you felt in the months, weeks, days, and even hours leading up to that transformative moment or that experience. Notice how it felt, the discomfort, the pain. Now bring to mind something you're currently going through that feels difficult, challenging, or confusing.

This could be big, or it could be small. And then notice, are there overlapping feelings that you're experiencing now that are similar to this past experience,? Fear, uncertainty doubt? And can you remind yourself that these are a natural part of growth and perhaps that you're about to enter a new chapter of your life. Take a moment to feel into this recognition, breathe it in fully, and just hold it in your awareness. This new orientation. This respect for pain discomfort, the unknown.

If your eyes have been closed, you can let them open again. I hope this reflection helps you shift your orientation to whatever it is you might be going through right now. We tend to forget that we've gotten through some difficult things. And we also tend to forget that those difficult things often lead to some sort of positive growth. So hope you could take this with you into your day.

Thank you for your practice and let's settle in for today's meditation.
