Is Worry Important?

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to

your Daily Mindfulness.

In today's session, we're

going to talk about worry.

So I'd like to give you a

contemplation for today.

How much worry will satisfy the part of

you that says it's important to worry?

How much worry will satisfy the part of

you that says it's important to worry?

Worry can be a useful tool to take

proactive and preventative measures

against future potential suffering.

And it can be a way that we borrow

suffering, often out of habit and

often to a degree that is not actually

useful, but instead debilitating.

And having an honest inquiry with

the part of you that worries can be a

useful practice for acknowledging the

utility of worry, but developing a more

appropriate and sustainable use for it.

If we're just engaged with it out of

habit, well, then we're kind of moving

through worry on automatic pilot.

And perhaps our, the degree to which

we think worry is useful is based on

old habits of conditioning, an old

lifestyle, a time in our life where

worry maybe was very important, but is

no longer serving us in the same way.

By having a conversation with worry and

asking it honestly, like how much is

going to satisfy you, how much worry do

we actually need to do, you're making

worry an ally rather than an enemy.

And the key thing with worry is that

it feels seen, is that it knows you're

acknowledging its presence and it knows

you're acknowledging the utility of its

presence, because it does have utility.

It does have a positive intention.

We just want to make sure we're using it

appropriately rather than it using us.

So today, as you're walking around and you

find yourself maybe caught up in stress,

worry, future thinking, ask yourself,

how much worry will satisfy the part of

me that says it's important to worry?

Thank you for your practice.

Let's settle in for today's meditation.
