It’s OK Not to Change

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today I'm going to talk about why it's okay not to change. So mindfulness isn't about changing yourself. It's not about improving yourself or becoming someone different. It's really about knowing yourself as you already are and being yourself more fully.

And of course the paradox is that often in this process of knowing ourselves more deeply and being ourselves more fully, there are changes in our lives. But it's worth remembering that we also just don't need to change at all. I mean, this is not the goal of meditation or mindfulness practice. I think sometimes there's an expectation that unless we have radically changed over time as we meditate that something's gone really wrong. But I'm here to tell you we don't have to change.

We only need to see ourselves and accept ourselves just as we are right now. So often with mindfulness training, I think that we can get into this idea that we need to like act a certain way. We think we should speak slower or move more smoothly, or always smile or never be angry if we're mindful enough or something like that. I actually remember going through a phase of my life where I felt like this. I felt like if I was really mindful, I would always walk or talk or even dress in a certain way.

Over time, I relaxed all of that and learned to just let go of trying to be some kind of image of what I thought mindfulness was supposed to look like. And I learned to just be more comfortable in my own skin as I am. We don't need to change ourselves, fix ourselves or improve ourselves, and we don't need to be a certain way. There's no particular way that mindfulness even looks in the world. It doesn't mean that we'll move slower or talk in a certain way.

Becoming more aware, shows up differently for everybody. So when it comes to mindfulness, just remembering that we are simply training ourselves to be present with life as it is in the moment. We're training ourselves to be more aware and awake to whatever we're doing in each moment, whether we're talking, cooking, driving, or drinking tea. And in time, we're becoming more and more able to embody awareness and the qualities that come with it, like clarity, peace, wisdom. So as always, thank you for your practice and your presence here with us.

And now let's settle in for today's meditation.
