Key To Spiritual Growth

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to

your Daily Mindfulness.

In today's session, I want to

talk about spiritual growth.

Now the word spirituality can be a

provocative word, but when I use it,

I'm primarily referring to how we find

inner freedom within the human condition.

And when it comes to this kind of growth,

often the thing we most need to look

at is the part of us that is looking.

The thing we most need to look at

is the part of us that is looking.

And that is the part of us that is

thinking, oh, that's the thing that

will lead to my peace and my freedom.

Let me go do that now.

Until you're able to become aware

of this part of you that is thinking

and orienting toward freedom being

somewhere out there, you can easily

end up like a dog chasing its tail.

Going from practice to book to seminar

to guru, thinking that the next thing

will be your ladder to some sort

of refuge, some sort of freedom.

And it's not that these things can't

be very useful for pointing the way.

I mean, Mindfulness.com is

essentially that for you as well.

But we have to be careful not to

overly attach to these things being

the ladder that we need to climb.

And once we do, then we're going

to end up with some sort of goodie.

Because the heart of this work is

not about creating another ladder.

It's about recognizing that you're

already on a never-ending ladder.

And what keeps you caught in cycles of

suffering is this addiction to the idea

that the next rung will make this life

less unpredictable than it inherently is.

Real inner freedom doesn't

come from stability.

It comes from relaxing into instability.

So when you notice yourself caught in

that idea of once I get there, take a

moment to pause and say to yourself,

can I just relax into the spaciousness

of myself right here, right now?

Can I allow myself to feel my

inherent okayness in this moment?

This is our practice at its core,

and it can be done in each moment.

Thank you for your practice.

Let's settle in for today's meditation.
