Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today, we're going to talk about letting yourself be blessed. So every day life bestows on us a multitude of gifts. Our lungs keep breathing, hearts keep beating. If we're lucky we get to wake up and look through eyes that can see, that can see colors and shapes and light and shadow, a tree blowing in the wind, the face of our loved one, stars at night.
Perhaps if we're also the lucky ones, we've got food in the cupboard, water in the taps, walls to protect us from the elements. We're able to stay warm in the winter days and there's medical systems to support us. Other gifts that we receive are things like hearing the laughter of children and the sound of music, feeling the kindness of a stranger, the warmth of the sun, the smell of freshly baked bread, when our loved ones are doing okay, and our health is sound, when our neighborhood is safe and our body isn't racked with pain. These, and in a million other ways that we often overlook, we're receiving blessing after blessing after blessing. But as we go through our busy lives, even though we're standing on a mountain of gifts, we do have a tendency to overlook all the generosity and abundance that tends to pour forth from life.
And it's not through any fault of our own. It's just the way that the human mind evolved. Because the human mind evolved in a certain way, we often focus on what we lack, what we want, what's missing. But that creates a sense of scarcity and dissatisfaction. But we can retrain the mind by learning to pay more attention to all the good fortune and gifts we already have.
By doing so we naturally become more joyful, more content and more mentally strong. So today and ongoing, see if you can notice and acknowledge the many blessings all around, you. Let the sense of abundance and appreciation, really fill your mind and body and take up residence inside you. So as Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, "In ordinary life we hardly realize that we have received a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes truly rich."
