Letting Go of Material Things

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness.

In today's session we're going to

talk about the relationship between

material things and attachment.

And I'll start by

sharing a bold statement.

As much time as you spend trying

to attain material things should

you spend cultivating a mind that

is not attached to material things.

It's one thing to own something and

it's another thing for its own you.

And the more mental energy we invest

into material things, thinking about

them, craving them, imagining the

happiness that they'll bring to us,

well, the more we start to develop

subconscious attachments to these things,

more deeply depending on them for our

wellbeing or our perceived wellbeing.

Of course, material things can be

great, but we just want to make

sure we, we manage our relationship

to them so that they don't take

ownership over us and our wellbeing.

One way to cultivate a mind that is not

as attached to material things is to learn

to enjoy the experience of nothingness.

That is the absence of material things.

And one way to learn to enjoy

nothingness is to practice meditation.

And one way to practice meditation, in

addition to the practices we do here at

Mindfulness.com together, is to simply

sit quietly by yourself for short periods

of time throughout the day, just focusing

on your body breathing or the sounds

around you, or just simply being still.

And then notice all the ways your

mind tries to convince you to do

something more entertaining or

more extravagant or more enjoyable.

Notice that conditioning

cause it's, it's just habit.

Take a breath and practice relaxing

back into the simplicity of this moment.

Eventually, you'll start to see that

doing nothing is far from nothing.

There's lots to be entertained by

when we train our mind to be more

attuned to the subtle goodness of

just being and less attached to

needing the next metaphorical toy.

That itself is a tense, uh,

and unenjoyable experience.

So the good news is you're already

training this capacity in our

meditations, and you can continue

to add this throughout the day

by just dropping into periods of

non-doing, periods of nothing this.

As always thank you for your practice and

let's settle in for today's meditation.
