Letting Things Settle

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about letting things settle. And specifically, I'd like to offer you a practice that helps let things settle. Now, when I'm talking about letting things settle, I'm talking more about the agitation that can accumulate in our mind from the acute experiences or just the general accumulation of stressors of life. You might be noticing it right now, perhaps.

Different thoughts about the future, the past, ideas about things that need to get done, things that may be important. However, when we're consumed by all of these thoughts and ideas and stories, we can further disconnect from a more subtle sense of who we are and where we're going and what is true for us in each moment. And that's where grounding practices can be really useful. Practices that root us into our bodies, that drop us beneath some of the noise in our mind and help reconnect us to that more quiet, subtle, but poignant pulse of truth moving through us. So to do this, let's just find a comfortable posture.

It could be sitting, could be standing. And just imagine that your legs are extending into the earth like roots. If you'd like to close your eyes, you're welcome to. This can be a visualization. Imagining the legs rooting into the earth.

And then imagine that your upper body is expanding up, kind of like a tree blossoming toward the sky or even a light that is emanating toward the sky. So you have these oppositional movements, rooting down, expanding up. And let's just take a deep breath here. And on the exhale, relaxing around your frame so that the muscles soften around the skeleton. And there's a sense of being rooted, but also expanded.

And in this space, just repeat after me. I feel myself as an extension of the earth. I am held by the earth beneath me. And who I am is bigger than the thoughts in my mind. If your eyes are closed, you can let them open.

And this is a simple practice you can do throughout the day when you find yourself disconnected from yourself or really caught in the thoughts in your mind. Root down, expand up, take a deep breath, and then just remind yourself you're an extension of the earth, you're held by the earth beneath you, and who you are, is bigger than the thoughts in your mind. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
