Non-Striving in a Striving World

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about non-striving. Non-striving is one of the attitudinal factors originally outlined by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, as it relates to mindfulness. This is one of the attitudinal factors that many people have struggled with over the years, because it makes sense in the context of meditation, but it's more difficult to understand in the context of real life.

In meditation, we can understand how we're training ourselves to be present, not trying to get someplace else, just being with the breath or just simply being. And it's, it's easier to understand how non striving plays into that. Where it's more difficult to understand is how non striving plays into know life, where we have goals, things we need to accomplish, things we might need to fix. And all of those are realities. So what does it mean to practice non-striving in real life? Well, the important thing to remember is that non-striving is not about giving up on the future or not caring about the future.

It's about recognizing any impact we can have on the future can only be done by taking care of the present moment. And so any sort of striving that is done is done right here. It's tending to what is here right now. Giving it our full presence, our full awareness and our full care. And then letting go of what happens from there because the only thing we can do is take care of what's in front.

So see if you can incorporate this into your day, into your meditation practice, into your real life. We'll talk a little bit more about this in the meditation practice today. Thank you as always for your practice and I'll talk to you soon. Take care.
