Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about moments where you can let down your guard. So many of us live in a fight, flight, freeze or fawn reactivity. These are called the four Fs, and it's a response our nervous system has in relationship to difficult experiences. And these can include things like trauma, stress, toxic relationships or even communities that make us feel unsafe.
And in these moments of getting activated in that way, our guard can come up. We go into protection mode. We don't want to experience some pain. So the nervous system has designed in it to be a little bit more aware of what's going on. And it can make us feel more quick to get angry or more quick, to feel fearful.
We're most likely not going to be in a Zen, peaceful state in those moments. Our guards going to be up, we're in protective mode. And having our guard up in many of those moments can feel necessary. But there may also be times where it's happening out of habit, not necessity. And so in those moments throughout the day, what I invite you to do is just take a deep breath and then say to yourself, I'm safe right now.
I'm safe right now. Since the nervous system can get caught up in these patterns of conditioning, it may be on guard, even in moments where there isn't an immediate threat. So this is a practice that you can do, even in moments where you might not perceive that your guard is up. When you're with someone you care about, when you're at work, when you're driving in the car, check to see is my guard up right now. Am I in a survival state? Am I in protective mode? And can you remind yourself that, Oh, in this breath, I'm safe right now.
And that communicates to the system that it's okay to soften. It's okay to let the guard down. It's okay to relax. And in that space, you get to restore and reconnect to yourself and rejuvenate the energy that's often depleted when we're living our lives in a protective state. So thank you for your practice.
Let's settle in for today's meditation.

Vidyamala’s tips on catching anger as it’s happening or about to happen are great - clear, practical, and doable.
- Vicoir
The little talks before the meditations are priceless. It's like I've found my peeps. The topics, the quotes, the goals—it all makes so much sense to me, things I want to be thinking and learning about. Most importantly, the meditations are kindness-centered, which I love. It feels like a new way to approach meditation.
- Lauren
Incredible, easy to navigate app. I would highly recommend this app to anyone who wishes to reduce stress and anxiety or simply as an aid to improve overall mental health.
- Kirtus
I love how the app gives me pointers to new things to explore.
- Lydia
So calm and soothing. I love the new bundle with Kelly Boys, she’s brilliant!
- EJ
Better than Headspace. I've had the paid version of both apps, and I must say I enjoy this one better.
