Relating to Fear

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts.

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about relating differently to fear. Oftentimes fear can create a helpless response causing us to freeze with anxiety. Chances are you've experienced this in the context of fear in your own life at some point. However, when we relate to fear with kindness and curiosity, we activate the part of our brain that overrides the helpless response.

By simply saying something like, "Hi fear. I see you. I know it's scary, but we can do this," you are anchoring yourself in your awareness of your fear rather than the fear itself. And that creates a much more empowered experience. So you do not need to be fearless.

Instead, appreciate fear as a part of being human, assess its value in your current context and recognize that fear is a data signal, not an impasse. Then practice moving forward with fear as a companion, rather than an enemy. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
