Taking Responsibility for Yourself

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome back to

your Daily Mindfulness.

In today's session, we're

going to talk about taking

responsibility for who we are.

We can easily make the argument

that who we are and how we express

ourselves in the world is the result

of genetic and social variables

that were mostly out of our control.

Stuff that has come from our past

and has influenced how we think, how

we feel, how we act in the world.

Personally, I think this is

a fair and logical argument.

However, to passively resign to this

as our fate, or even our excuse for

being a certain way, especially if

it's harmful to others, would be

antithetical to what it means to be human.

It would be antithetical because

we've also been gifted with this

thing called awareness, the ability

to observe ourselves and discern our

thoughts, our beliefs and behaviors, and

decide how we want to relate to them.

And I believe this awareness, this

capacity to self-reflect comes

with responsibility because it

gives us a choice in how we respond

regardless of what may be arising.

Recognizing that there are past

experiences that have influenced

who we are today should make space

for more self-compassion, for sure.

And it should also give us some

empathy for others who also have

had a lot of past experiences, some

perhaps much more difficult than ours.

And recognizing that we have a choice

in how we will respond to the reality

of what is here should inspire us

to see that we still have personal

power and can make positive change.

I don't believe it's a person's fault

for who they are, but I do believe

it's a person's responsibility to be

self-aware and to make necessary changes.

We'll continue to explore the

self-awareness and our meditation today,

but thank you for your practice and

let's settle in for our practice today.
