Taming the Mind

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today we're going to focus on one of the most important aspects of mindfulness, and that is the attitude with which we practice. So mindfulness is the awareness that arises when we're fully present in the moment, but it also involves an attitude of kindness and open-heartedness towards what's happening. That includes an attitude of kindness towards ourselves. Now, while we may be kind to others, we're very often not kind to ourselves.

You know, that voice of the inner critic can be a pretty harsh companion, constantly trying to whip us into shape, get us to measure up, achieve and succeed. It often puts us down, tells us when not enough and belittles us. Now as a result of that in a dialogue, we can really lose confidence in ourselves, feel unworthy and find ourselves really bound up in stress intention. And we can be especially harsh with ourselves when we make a mistake or things don't go the way we want them to. So wjen we're practicing meditation it's common to see this tendency reflected in the way we react when our mind wanders.

You know, often we become frustrated, impatient or disappointed when the mind wanders, it's kind of an automatic reaction. But if we can train ourselves to be patient respectful, calm, and kind with mind when it wanders, we can stop being at war with ourselves. And with practice, this kindly and calm awareness that we cultivate in meditation becomes our new way of being and naturally flows into our relationships, our homes, and our whole lives. So in today's meditation, we'll be training in cultivating a calmer and kinder mind and learning to hold whatever's happening in a loving awareness that's larger than at all.
