Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today, I'm going to talk about temple bells. So one of the ways that monks in monasteries really learn to integrate mindfulness into their day to day activities is that every so often in the day, at random times, the temple bell will ring. Now when it does everybody pauses what they're doing, just momentarily, and focuses on becoming more fully present in the moment. They just pause there for a moment and then continue on with what they're doing with a greater awareness.
Now we don't live in monasteries, most of us watching this, but we can use routine events as our temple bells, such as a phone ringing, hearing the sound of a plane over head, making a tea, going to the bathroom or any other event that happens at least a couple of times or more during the average day. My invitation for practice to you today and for the rest of the week is to choose one of these routine events and try making that into your temple bell. For me, it's planes going overhead. So whenever that thing happens, you just take a moment of pause. It could be as little as two seconds.
And just focus on really being centered in the present moment. And then when you do move on with what you are doing, making an intention to do that with more awareness, really paying attention to the effects that this simple practice has on your mood, your focus, your quality of life. In this way, we train ourselves over and over again to integrate mindfulness into our normal daily life so that we can carry more of a sense of calm, connectedness and clarity with us wherever we go and into whatever we do.
