The Conditions That Calm the Mind

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today, we're going to talk about the conditions that calm the mind. So the human mind is often aggravated by busy-ness, complexity, constant change and lots of stimulation. And when we have a lot of these conditions in our lives, the mind tends to race a lot and become really scattered. It tends to wander a lot under those conditions.

So then we become more prone to getting caught up in stress, anxiety, and negative emotions. We can also feel a bit lost. So what we tend to find is that the less complicated we make our lifestyle, the more space and simplicity we bring in, typically the more serene and calm the mind becomes. So of course it's no coincidence, right, that people from wisdom, traditions all over the world, whether they were monks, yogis, swamis, or sages, tend to live very simple lives with very few possessions. This provides really good conditions, actually for the mind to settle and calm.

But we don't need to go out into the Himalayas and become a monk and get rid of all of our possessions to do this. But there is great wisdom in there taking stock of our lives and seeing if there's any obvious ways in which we can simplify things and open up a little more space. So instead of filling up every space in our calendar, perhaps we could say no a little more and create more space instead of filling up our lives with more stuff, maybe we can, de-clutter, enjoy having less. Instead of racing around all the time, perhaps we can find ways to slow down so we can savor and enjoy our lives. When we do this, the tendency is that we feel immediately more calm and peaceful.

Of course we can't get rid of all of our challenges and responsibilities in life. But we can create more of these conditions to live with a little bit more simplicity and ease. So today's invitation is to take stock of the conditions in your life and see if there's anything you can do to create the conditions for a calmer mind. And remembering that as you do that, the simplicity isn't about removing the things that make you happy, it's about removing the things that distract you from being happy, the things that really matter. So as always thank you for your practice.

Thank you for your presence here with us. And let's settle in for today's meditation.
