The Power of Self-Respect

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about respecting yourself. An interesting thing happens when you start to respect yourself. You become much more sensitive to other people not respecting you and much less tolerant of it. There are a number of reasons why we might not have a sense of self-respect.

And some of that is often out of our control. It could be related to how we were raised, experiences with people during childhood, our caregivers. And did they instill a sense of feeling worthy or being worth respect? And if we didn't get that, we can develop an inner narrative that doesn't feel worthy of respect, that beats ourselves up. But through that, we end up creating a standard of what we believe we deserve and what we're allowed to receive. And if you've noticed this in your own life, perhaps, a certain inner critic or a way that you relate to yourself that is not from a place of compassion, but is more related to hate, berating yourself or just being your own worst critic.

Chances are when you hear that from other people, it's allowed a little bit more because you're so used to experiencing it yourself. However, as you go about the journey of personal development, personal growth, meditation, something starts to change on the inside. Your inner narrative becomes much more gentle, kinder, more compassionate, and more loving. Things like loving kindness meditation, or self-compassion meditation help with this. Well, now you have a new standard for how to relate yourself, to yourself, what you're worth.

And you become much more sensitive to when something different is coming into you from the outside. So the cool thing about this is that you're on this journey. You're developing this new inner narrative, this new sense of self-worth. And you may notice that relationships that seemed okay before, actually start to feel more troublesome. You become more aware of, Oh, this person actually, isn't nice to me.

They don't actually respect me. And if you're experiencing that, it might be a sign of your own growth. And it may be a sign that you do need to reorganize some of the people in your life, so that they meet the new standard that you're creating for yourself. It's just something to think about on your own inner growth journey, because it always will impact your outer world. Thank you for your practice.

Let's settle in for today's meditation.
