The Wisdom of Non-Interference

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today I'm going to talk about the wisdom of non-interference. So this touches on what I think is one of the most important insights in training in meditation. And that is, is that it's, it's less about what we do with the mind a lot of the time and more about knowing actually what not to do. You know, life unfolds in its own time.

Emotions unfold in their own time. Thoughts unfold in their own time. Our task is to simply step aside from it all and to not interfere, but to simply observe. And this is often a really big challenge because we have such a strong desire to try and make something happen or to change things. Especially in the case where we're experiencing painful emotions or unpleasant or unwanted thoughts.

It's kind of an instinct to want to push them away, push the feelings away, or try and fix or solve or change the situation in some way. But mindfulness is not about controlling our thoughts. It's about looking deeply and seeing into the true nature of thoughts. So it's not about fighting our emotions either. It's about honoring our emotions, allowing them, listening to them and seeing into their true nature.

And so when we learn to relax and observe, what's arising in the moment, we can see that we don't need to get rid of our thoughts. Actually, if you observe very closely, you see that actually thoughts, self-liberate. Like, like a pot of boiling water, where bubbles kind of emerge at the bottom and then they release and they kind of pop to the surface, that happens very quickly. Our thoughts do the same kind of thing. They emerge.

They unfold only very briefly in awareness. And then they just self-liberate, they dissolve. Emotions too emerge, and then they have a life within us and then dissolve in their own time. So the less we interfere through trying to change things, the more we can meet thoughts and emotions with an open and curious and kindly awareness. So we really do need to remember this wisdom of non-interference in our meditation.

So it's a very subtle shift from trying to do something or change something to letting go of doing and simply being and noticing the aliveness and fullness that's already here in this moment, right in front of our eyes. So with that in mind, let's settle in for today's practice. And as always, thank you for your practice and your presence here with us.
