Tragedy Can Harden or Soften Our Heart

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. You know, part of life is encountering difficult experiences. But sometimes these experiences can include being wronged by others or even witnessing or being a recipient of unfathomable acts of hatred in the examples of mass shootings or even genocide. In these moments, it's easy and understandable for our hearts to harden. The pain can be so great that we mask it with hatred of our own.

And at least for me, I'm sure you can resonate with this, that feels like a justified response. But this hatred, it also puts us in the same space or similar space of mind that that condemned action was created. And it was Einstein who said that we can't solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. So what if there was a pause before that hatred came in? What if we first felt the pain that was present for us? What if we allowed space for it? Asked where it's coming from> what it needs to tell us? And how best to respond in these moments. Instead of hardening our heart, this might soften it.

Instead of filling us with vengeance, it might offer space for compassion. And instead of leading us to perpetuate the very actions we condemn, it might help us respond to the hatred in ways that are most skillful, in ways we wish others could. So I'm not sure what you're going through and what you've experienced, but I hope this can offer a step in the direction of helping to keep your heart open. We'll do some more of this practice in today's meditation. And as always, thank you for your practice.

I'll talk to you soon and take care.
