Unwind Your Tension

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts.

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about unwinding tension. To unwind your deepest tension, in my opinion, requires the deepest stillness. And I'm not talking about stillness of body, although that can certainly help. I'm talking about stillness of being, something deep within you that is relating to your internal experience.

Any sense of trying to fix your tension tends to just be another form of tension. It's an aggression against the part of you that lives in defense. But more than anything, that part that's scared, that's fearful, that's anxious, that seems like it's creating extra tension for you, that part needs space. It needs time. It needs patience.

It needs curiosity. It needs love. It needs grace. And to offer that requires stillness, requires letting go, requires just being with it, not doing anything. Letting yourself unwind.

And a lot of times when we go about trying to relax or unwind some of that deep tension that's there, we go about it in the same way that caused that tension to come in the first place. We're forcing so many things in life. We're crossing all these things off our to-do list. We're trying to get to the next thing. All of which can be well and good for periods of time.

But if that is our only mode, we easily get wound up. And then we come to our meditation and we go, all right, time to unwind this tension. Relax, relax, relax. And all that is, is just another form of tension. So my invitation to you in your meditation practice and in your day, as you're working to unwind some of that deep seated tension, that could be on a psychological level, an emotional level, or even on a spirit level, a soul level, we could say, give it space.

Don't try to fix it. Don't try to force anything. Just let yourself be. The unwinding happens by showing up with space, curiosity, grace, and love. Hope that gives you something to think about as you continue this process of unwinding some of the deep tension that inevitably gets accumulated through life.

Thank you for your practice and let's settle in for today's meditation.
