What Are You Saying “Yes” To?

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about saying yes to life. If you're like me, the word, no can sometimes be a hard word to share to other people and also in relationship to our own life. There's something that can feel violent about saying no to something. It's a boundary and it's important, but it can feel like we're, we're shutting something down.

And if our conditioning over our life has been to maybe be kind or be open, or now that we're getting into mindfulness, we might think like, Oh, I need to be less judgmental or something, saying no can feel just in opposition to who we want to be. But I want to dispel that because it's really important to remember that in order to say yes to anything in your life, you have to say no to something else. Saying no is inevitable. We do it in every single moment. And a lot of times when we're saying no to something, that's the main thing we're focusing on.

The fact that we have to shut something down. We can't go down that path. I can't do this thing or I can't do this thing that this person wants me to do. Do no, no, no, no. And that can, that can feel overwhelming and it can make us feel like, Oh wow.

It's just like, I turn away from everything. However, in each of those moments of saying no, you can also look at the flip side. By saying no to that, what did you say yes to? What did you opt into? What did you support? What did you put a boundary around that you're now allowed to go in a different direction for something that inspires you, that feels more aligned to you? And so as you go about your day, notice your relationship to your, your yeses and your nos. And especially if you feel like you have a complicated relationship to know where putting up a boundary feels difficult, saying no to someone feels difficult. Recognize that doing that is also saying yes.

And instead of just focusing on the no, really try to highlight what is it I'm saying yes to? And can I feel the excitement, the enthusiasm, and the alignment of focusing on that yes? That might help you work through some of the complexity around saying no to things and having to turn away from things. Anytime you say no, you're also saying yes. Make sure you're holding that in your awareness. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
