Why We Don't Follow Intuition

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, I want to talk about a hindrance to following your intuition. Now, learning to attune to a form of intuitive guidance has been a big part of my mindfulness work recently. To me, it's the bridge between the insights that arise in meditation and how to make decisions in the world. What I've found though, is that a core hindrance to following our intuition is often our egos resistance to it being true.

But the ego is just a set of beliefs that tell you who you need to be in order to be safe and loved in the world. It's trying to protect you. But true freedom, safety and love do not come from the ego's protection. They come from aligning with the deepest spark of aliveness in you, placing it at the altar of your heart and then bowing to it as your greatest gift. This is essentially surrendering to the deepest truth that is arising in you.

So you may have noticed this in your own life, where there is a felt sense of this is true right now. I, I, I need to leave this job or I need to leave this person, or I need to make this difficult decision. But then the ego part of you, the part of you that is trying to keep you safe and protected comes in and says, wait, but you've got to think about this and this and this. And there can be importance to that because often following a deeper truth does have consequences. So we want to consult and figure out what is a skillful way to follow this.

But this is one of the ways that we can negotiate a way, negotiate a way, a deeper knowing within us. Something that we feel deeply in our being that is correct and true, but then the fear mind, the ego mind comes in and it goes, wait, wait, wait, we can't do that. So a big part of this process is just starting to listen more deeply for when that arises and being honest with yourself when that arises. I think everyone's path of following a deeper intuition is very personal. And as I said, there are often real-world consequences that can feel scary when it comes to following a truth within us, especially if we've developed and built the life around, maybe more of the story of our mind or more of the ego structure for us.

So you don't need to destroy everything you've built, just because there's a truth arising that says you want something else. But I do think it's important to develop a relationship to that and see where it might be guiding you. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
