Working With Old Pain

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to

your Daily Mindfulness.

In today's session, we're going to

talk about relating to our old pain.

When I say old pain, I'm referring

to difficult events that happened

years ago that continue to impact

our present lived experience.

It can be hard to navigate old pain

when it shows up, especially because

it can trigger our younger defense

mechanisms that were employed at

the time of the difficult event.

Especially if it was an event that

persisted over years, such as things

to do with developmental trauma.

This is why just being present to

old pain can sometimes feel like

an insufficient recommendation.

It's because our presence is easily

hijacked by our younger self.

And if you try to explore your old pain

through the lens of your younger self,

you'll often get stuck in the pain and

it will convince you of the efficacy of

your longstanding coping mechanisms, which

are often related to fear and control.

Therefore, to heal old pain and its

surrounding patterns, you must meet it

from the adult resourced part of you.

The part that can say, I know

this is painful, but it's not you.

Breathe, ground.

Just observe.

We're bigger than this.

The key turning point is when you can

locate your presence, ground itself, while

experiencing your past unground itself.

You know this is happening when you

have a sense of space, freedom and

empowerment amidst the painful experience.

This is how you reparent yourself.

By showing up for the younger version

of you with the adult version of you.

Again, it can be as simple as meeting

your fear and confusion and just saying,

I know this is painful, but it's not you.

Let's just breathe through it and

connect to our deeper knowing.

Thank you for your practice.

Let's settle in for today's meditation.
