Settling Into Mindfulness

These simple and easy movements help young children prepare their mind and body for mindfulness practices and meditation.

Hi friends. Today, we're going to get ready to practice mindfulness together. To start, we're going to settle down to make a yummy picnic of apple sauce, pepperoni pizza, and orange juice. To get started, let's sit on down and get really comfy in our seat. We're going to cross our legs and place our hands on our knees.

Great. Now, to make apple sauce and pepperoni pizza, we're going to crisscross our arms from one knee to the other, back and forth, as we sing, "crisscross apple sauce" three times. Then we're going to dance our hands high above our heads as we chant, "pepperoni pizza." Okay. Are you ready? Let's go. Crisscross apple sauce.

Pepperoni pizza. Great. Let's do that one more time. Are you ready? Let's go. Crisscross apple sauce.

Pepperoni pizza. Now, can you place your hands on your head? Hands on your shoulders? Hands on your knees? Hands on your toes? One big clap and hands in your lap. Now it's time to make a couple glasses of orange juice together. To start, let's take a big breath in as we scoop up an orange in each hand. Raise the orange out in front of you.

Then hold your breath while squeezing your hands into fists. Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze to get all the orange juice out. Now, let's breathe out and lower arms back down. Let's raise the cup of orange juice up to take a big drink. Ah, that was yummy.

Let's make one last glass of orange juice. Take a big breath in while raising your arms, holding an orange in each hand. Hold your breath and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze to get all the orange juice out. And slowly breathe out as you lower your arms back down. Let's take a big drink of the orange juice.

Ah, that was very refreshing. That was so much fun making apple sauce, pepperoni pizza, and orange juice together. Let's do it again soon. I hope that you felt calm and collected. Thank you for joining me today and I'll see you again next time.
