Cultivating Equanimity

Many consider equanimity to be the highest form of happiness. In this meditation, we'll practice cultivating a mind that is balanced, still, and content.

Let's start by finding a comfortable posture. This could be sitting, standing, or lying down. If it's comfortable to do so, you can let your eyes close. And we'll take a deep breath together. In through the nose.

And slowly out through the mouth. Inviting the jaw to relax and soften. The teeth don't need to be clenched. Invite the shoulders to be at ease. As well as the hands and the belly.

We'll let the breath come back into its natural rhythm. Not forcing it, not trying to deepen it. Just letting the body breathe, however it normally breaths. And we'll spend a few moments, anchoring our attention at the breath to help stabilize our awareness. So in this meditation where cultivating the happiness of equanimity.

This deep balance within us that is not gripping at all the things we want. It's not fighting all the things we resist. There's just a sense of ease. And feel if you could connect to that in this moment. And especially feel it on the exhale.

So see if you connect to that as well. As if the whole system is relaxing a little more deeply into this moment, however it is. When cultivating and embodying equanimity, I like to think of a mountain, which I'm going to invite you to do as well. A mountain has this sense of groundedness and openness to the various elements, the climate, the weather, but yet it stays steady, resilient, unwavering. So bring to your mind an image of a mountain.

Notice what it looks like. The color. How big or small it is. And start to get a sense of its qualities. What do you feel as you look at it? What do you imagine it would be like to have a mountain-like presence? And now imagine yourself merging with the mountain.

Taking on its presence, its quality of equanimity. So feeling your posture shift to be that of the mountain. Feeling your inner peace and resilience shift to be that of the mountain. And just allow yourself to sit steady, at ease, fully grounded, fully balanced. As we come to the end of our meditation, notice this internal feeling you have and remember that this is something you can come back to whenever you want.

You didn't go someplace else to get it. You cultivated it right here. So let's take one last deep breath together. In through the nose. Out through the mouth.

And when you're ready, you can open your eyes. As always thank you for your practice. It's not just for you, but your family, your community, our environment, and our world. So you're doing good work. I'll talk to you soon and until then, take care.
